direct, the personal communication manager organized all person-related information in a simple, yet flexible database. Its straightforward user interface gave you instant access to the information you need: look up any person with just a few keystrokes. direct sets up phone connections fast and without any trouble using its own smart phone dialer, or select a phone number in any other application and use the direct dial service to call this number.

direct was the first application to include an address book that was directly based on the NEXTSTEP Workspace addresses. direct did not need to export fax numbers to the Workspace or import Workspace address folders as it used the same address database concurrently with the Workspace. The Workspace was immediately notified of address changes made in direct and vice versa, leading to always up-to-date information in the fax panel fax number lists, and on fax cover pages containing an address. Unlike the Workspace address inspector, direct was streamlined towards fast information access. The efficient keyboard control let you search rapidly in the different fields without having to resort to the mouse. Once an address was selected, you could directly add or modify information.

direct included its own smart telephone dialer that could dial phone numbers for you (if you use it with the mix box).

The phone dialer remembered the last numbers you dialed and kept them ready for fast and easy redial. If used with mix, direct was integrated into the automatic service detection, automatically switching incoming calls to fax, modem, or telephone. With its intuitive user interface, direct pus an end to complicated key combinations on your telephone.
