Squash

Squash was a lossless (no data is lost) file compression and floppy backup utility. Files and folders that were compressed then decompressed with Squash ended up identical to the original files and folders.

What Squash Could Do For You

Free up space on your hard disk by compressing files and folders.

Help you transport files and folders bigger than the size of a floppy.

Make floppy backups of folders on your hard disk.

Reduce data transfer time when modeming by compressing files before transferring.

Feature List
Seamless integration with Workspace Manager & NeXTStep
Files could be compressed by dropping their icons on the Squash icon. (The same interface used to recycle disk space.) From the Workspace, files could be compressed with a single Command Key.

Easy Decompression
Opening a squashed file was as easy as double-clicking the file in Workspace. Squash decompressed the file and then opened the file in the original application.

Compression Speed Control
You could choose to compress files slowly and get very compressed files. Or, you could compress your files quickly and get less compressed files.

Folder compression
Folders could be bundled and compressed into a single file.

Easy exchange of compressed files and archives
A free application called "UnSquashOnly" was included with Squash and could be distributed with your files and archives, so that others could open your Squash documents.

Floppy Backup
Folders were simultaneously compressed and backed up to floppy disk - greatly decreasing the number of floppies required to backup a folder. All you has to do was insert floppies, Squash automatically initialized new floppies.

Partial Extraction
Single files and subfolders could be extracted from a squashed folder or floppy archive without having to decompress the entire folder, or without inserting all the floppies of an archive.

Strategic Squeezing
Squash could find and squash old files at night - giving you more disk space the next morning.

Works when you want it to
Squash could be customized to only work when you are not using your computer - putting your spare computer power to work to save you disk space.

File Splitting
Large files could be split into pieces and then automatically be rejoined by double-clicking on one of the pieces.

Status Panel
Estimated time to complete an operation and the percentage complete was continually updated.

Multi-tasking
You could add more files to be squashed while simultaneously squashing other files.

To Do List
The order in which files were processed could be modified in a "To Do" List.

On-line Help
The entire users manual was available on-line complete with graphics.
