Author was a powerful word processor for NEXTSTEP with a number of unique features. Author supported headers, footers, footnotes, columns, mail merge, paragraph styles, graphics (in text or fixed on page), kerning, cracking, variables (user name, document name, page, column and footnote index, dare and time), multiple document views, zooming, templates, and much more.
Author supported NEXTSTEP Object Links and multilevel undo of all commands. Author was tightly integrated with the Questor spreadsheet and the Graphity business graphics applications from Xanthus. Using the Open Object Embedding (OOE) from Xanthus, worksheets and graphs could be inserted in Author documents and could be edited directly from within the correct application. OOE was a powerful extension 10 Object Links in NEXTSTEP.
